Hogback Creek Bridge re-decking complete
After six weeks of work, the new white oak decking on our founding bridge is finished. Enormous thanks to Madison County Secondary Roads and to the 19 members who contributed to the decking fund. A reopening ceremony with ribbon cutting is set for Saturday, August 8 at 10:00 a.m. — walkers welcome, dogs on leashes.
Summer issue of The Kingpost in the mail
The Summer 2026 issue features a history of the Roann Bridge's 1877 raising, part two of Eleanor Voss's series on reading truss repairs like tree rings, and the full Bridge Days schedule. Members should see it in mailboxes within the week.
Welcome, Ted Wind
HCBA is pleased to welcome our summer intern, Ted Wind, who will be leading the slide archive digitization project and assisting with registry updates. Ted has already scanned 400 slides and identified two photographs of bridges we believed undocumented. A full introduction appears in the summer newsletter.
Micro-grant awarded for Roann Bridge signage
The board has approved an $1,800 micro-grant to the Friends of the Roann Bridge (Wabash County, Indiana) for interpretive signage at both portals of the 288-foot Howe truss span. Installation is expected before their October festival.
The Kingpost — Our Quarterly Newsletter
The Kingpost has been mailed to members quarterly since 1990 — typed on a Selectric for the first eight years, and only slightly fancier since. Each issue runs twelve pages: bridge histories, restoration updates, member photographs, and the registry-corrections column, “Crossed Timbers.”
